Walking Football Explained

A version of the game in which running is not allowed. It was designed for older players and has become a sport in its own right.

The one rule that changes everything

In walking football players must walk. Running, with or without the ball, is penalised with a free kick to the other side. Everything else follows from that: the game becomes about positioning and passing instead of pace.

Other common rules

Organisers usually limit physical contact and often restrict the height of the ball, which keeps play on the ground and reduces collisions. Details vary between organisers, so ask before your first session.

Who plays

Sessions are typically aimed at people over fifty, but many welcome players in their forties, people returning from injury and anyone who wants the game without the sprinting.

What to expect

Getting started

Search for sessions run by local clubs, leisure centres or community sports organisations. Turn up in trainers and shin pads; most groups lend bibs and will explain the house rules.
