Fantasy Football Basics for People Who Never Tried It
You pick a squad of real players and score points from what they do in real matches. It is the simplest way to care about fixtures that do not involve your team.
How it works
In fantasy football each participant selects a squad of real players within a budget. Points are awarded for what those players do in actual matches: goals, assists, clean sheets and so on. Totals are compared in leagues with friends or strangers.
Typical rules
- A fixed budget and a limit on how many players you may take from one club.
- A starting line-up and substitutes each round.
- A captain whose points count extra.
- A limited number of transfers between rounds.
Free and paid versions
The best-known games run by leagues and broadcasters are free to enter. Others charge an entry fee and pay prizes. Whether paid contests are permitted depends on where you live, and the rules on how prizes are paid out differ too; see how payouts work.
Starting well
- Join a small league with people you know. The conversation is the point.
- Pick players who actually play every week before you chase bargains.
- Set a reminder for the deadline. Forgetting to set a team is the most common mistake.
